Hidden within Lake Lanier is another dam called Dunlap Dam and Shoals.

dunlapdamPhotographed in 1956, Dunlap Dam and Shoals were located three miles from Gainesville on the Chattahoochee River prior to the creation of Lake Lanier in 1956. The back waters of the dam were called Lake Warner, named in honor of General Warner. A power plant was built there to furnish electric current for Gainesville.

Electricity came shortly after 1900 with the building of Dunlap Dam across the Chattahoochee River. The power was used for the trolley lines which brought tourists from downtown Gainesville to the park created around the lake at the dam. Extra power was sold to the city of Gainesville for streetlights, making it the first city south of Baltimore with electric street lighting. Private homes began to use the new-fangled power source. The first electric appliance store opened in 1917.

Today this dam and lake sit 97 feet below the surface of Lake Lanier close to War Hill Park (see map at top). It is one of the hidden secrets of Lake Lanier
